Firstly let me start by saying that I am NOT an expert on SEO although many companies nowadays claim to be experts. There are undoubtedly many companies around with a depth of knowledge that would take you to great heights on Google ranking, but you would probably have to pay highly for their services. This small short article, based mainly on keywords is aimed either at beginners to SEO or people who have an existing website and would like to do a few basic checks themselves “Behind the Scenes” to see exactly how their website design is performing and how they themselves could improve the search engine optimsation of their web design. You do not need to know how to design a website, you just need to do lots of research, which can be very time consuming, however with this new found information you can supply your web designer with the “Ammunition!” to improve your ranking with Google

Identify your keywords

When a user visits a search engine, they type words into the search box to find what they are looking for. The search terms they type are called keywords.and the combinations of keywords are keyphrases.Ideally, you should undertake keyword research well before you choose a domain name, structure your site, and build your content. However this is not always possible.To identify the best keywords for your web design I suggest you take a look at your competitors websites first. There is a wonderful free tool available that will give you all the keywords your competitors’ use   www.abakus-internet-marketing.de/tools/topword.html I suggest you copy and past this url into the top bar of your internet explorer bar, then all you have to do is type in your competitors website address ( only pick competitors that rank highly on Google)and up will come all the keywords that they are using. I advise you to copy what appears to work for them, but adapt it suit yourself, in other words, “Don’t follow the crowd” You may be surprised by the keywords that they use.

Keyword Discovery & Mistakes in keyword selection

Most people approach SEO with a preconception or prejudice about what their best keywords are. I did!!! I thought the best keyword for my website would be “website designer” but in fact it turned out to be “web design” website designer is searched (from wordtracker) 436 times a day in the U.K whereas web design is searched 5,463 times a day.  Google gave these figures for August web design 673,000 website design 201,000 web site design 60,000 the url for this is https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal  I hope you can see why choosing the correct keywords are vital. The downside of course of choosing such popular keywords is that the competition will be greater. You have to make the decision whether to go for the “big fish” or be content to catch a few “small fish” This website below has a 7 day free trial and  is great for giving information on how many times keywords are used  http://www.gorank.com/seotools/ontology/  you can copy and paste it into the top of your internet explorer bar. The balance must be struck between keyword attractiveness and keyword popularity. You will need to keep your keywords between 40- 50

Spam is the name given to “nasty things” that might be on your website. 1. Keyword Stuffing - too many words on your page containing your keywords. You should aim at 5% density that means, for every 100 words of text you have you can put your keywords into that 5 times, possibly more but you may risk being penalised by Google! 2. Invisible text. This is text that is the same colour as the background colour of your page but again you may be penalised by Google. 3. Unatural text,webmaster sometimes attempt to fill text phrases with keywords and in doing so they make the text less readable and bit unatural. Again there is free tool for you to find out more information about your website. This one just does the basics, but if you get into SEO a lot more you will find other websites much more sophisticated, with lots of web jargon! If you already have an existing website then you will already have your domain name, however if you are thinking of having a website designed then you really should try and put some of your keywords into your domain name. For example Valid Web Design - web design being one of my main keywords or keyphrases. Its not always easy to build a website and text around keeping a search engine happy, after all websites are really meant for us humans! Its all about finding the balance as most things are in life! There are lots of websites out there where you can search to see if a domain is available and if you find its not available with a co.uk ending you can opt for .com

Keyword Density

If you are going to write your own text for your website you need to bear in mind your keywords. They cannot appear more than 5 times in every 100 words of text. This is known as 5% keyword density, anymore than 5% and you could again get penalised by Google.
